The History of Suzuki
Suzuki Motor Corporation is a multi-focused company based in Japan that develops and manufactures a variety of vehicles and other combustion powered engine products. Based in Japan, Suzuki has production companies in 22 countries and areas around the world and has a partnership with the India-based company, Maruti—the largest automotive manufacturer in India.
Michio Suzuki founded Suzuki Loom Works in Japan in 1909. In 1952, they created and marketed a motorized bicycle called the Power Free, featuring a 2 x 36cc engine. The motorized bicycle became so popular that the company changed its name to Suzuki Motor Corporation in 1954. General Motors noted the rapid success of the Suzuki in 1981 and bought shares in the young company. They continued to acquire shares of stock and as of 2001 owned 20.4% of Suzuki. In 2006, GM divested their shares in Suzuki that were purchased for $2 billion dollars.
History of Suzuki in the United States
In 1985, General Motors became interested in competing in the rising demand for small cars. They introduced the Chevrolet Spirit (made by Suzuki) and Samurai (also known as the Jimmy, Sierra and SJ410/SJ413) in the United States. They were phenomenal hits. No other Japanese company sold more cars in the U.S. in its first year than Suzuki did. In 1989, American Suzuki introduced the Swift and its first attempt at an American SUV, the Sidekick, and in 1995 the Esteem joined the line up. In 1999, the X-90 replaced Samurai and the Vitara and the Grand Vitara replaced the Sidekick. After 2001, the Esteem had been replaced with the Areo and the Swift was dropped altogether.
This left the Suzuki line up with one car and one SUV. In 2004, GM and Suzuki bought the defunct Daewoo Company. Suzuki renamed two Daewoo cars, the compact Forenza and the mid-sized Verona. With a little Suzuki ingenuity, the Forenza added wagon and hatchback body styles. In 2006, Suzuki’s own Grand Vitara was back with a new look.
