The History of Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile was a brand of automobile owned by General Motors, founded by Ransom E. Olds, and was produced in the United States from 1897 to 2004. In its 107 years, it produced 35.2 million cars, including at least 14 million built at its Lansing factory. When it was phased out, Oldsmobile was the oldest surviving American automobile companies, and one of the oldest in the world, after Daimler and Peugeot. The spirit of Oldsmobile has lived on in GM’s Buick brand as the Intrigue lives on as the Buick LaCrosse, the Aurora lives on as the Buick Lucerne, the Bravada lives on as the Buick Rainier, and the Silhouette lives on as the Buick Terraza.

Oldsmobiles were first manufactured by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company in Lansing, Michigan. In 1901, producing 425 cars, the Oldsmobile become the first high-volume car of the day. Oldsmobile, for a few years, was the top selling car company in the United States. General Motors purchased the company in 1908.

The Vista Cruiser was a station wagon built by the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors from 1964 to 1977, which was based on the Oldsmobile Cutlass/F-85 model, but had a slightly longer wheelbase than the cars it was based upon. Noted for the glass found in the roof over the second-row seating and for the smaller glass panels over the rear cargo area windows, this car was introduced to the public on February 4, 1964. This body style with the split front skylight continued through the 1967 model year and was replaced by a radically redesigned model for 1968 that featured a one-piece front skylight. The Vista Cruiser is also famous for its role as Eric Forman’s car in the FOX sitcom That ’70s Show.

The Toronado was a two-door coupé automobile produced by the Oldsmobile Division of General Motors from 1966 to 1992. The name has no meaning, and was originally invented for a 1963 Chevrolet show car. Conceived as Oldsmobile’s full-size personal luxury car and competing directly with the Ford Thunderbird and Buick Riviera, the Toronado is historically significant as the first front-wheel drive automobile produced in the United States since the demise of the Cord in 1937.

The Oldsmobile Achieva was introduced in 1992 and was a front-wheel drive compact car based on the GM N platform with the Pontiac Grand Am and the Buick Skylark. The Achieva replaced the Cutlass Calais during its final year in 1991, which was also on the GM N platform. The Achieva was available as a sedan and a coupe. It also had 4 trim levels; S, SC, SL, and SCX. The engines available were the high output version of the 2.3 L Quad 4 (LD9) and the 3.1 L V6. The Achieva’s last model year was in 1998, and it was replaced by the Alero in 1999.

The Oldsmobile Alero was introduced in spring 1998 as a 1999 model to replace the Achieva and Cutlass. The Alero went into production on April 6, 1998. All Aleros were built in Lansing, Michigan. The Alero was Oldsmobile’s last compact car as well as the last vehicle sold under the brand. Production ended on April 29, 2004.

The Oldsmobile Aurora was a luxury automobile made by the Oldsmobile division of General Motors and launched in 1995. It was a luxurious 4-door sedan riding on the same Cadillac-derived G platform as the 2-door Buick Riviera, and took over from the Ninety-Eight as the top-of-the-line Oldsmobile. It was introduced to bring new life to Oldsmobile, but the first few years of Aurora did not even feature the Oldsmobile name. There was even a rumor at the time that the name of the whole Oldsmobile brand would be changed to simply "Aurora."

The 1991 Bravada was an upscale version of the then-new 4-door S-Blazer/Jimmy. It was the first truck-based vehicle offered by Oldsmobile since the 1920s, and by that time was a United States-only vehicle. Unlike its siblings, the Bravada was only offered with "Smart Trak"all-wheel drive and the 4.3 L Z-code engine. Anti-lock brakes and remote keyless entry were also standard. This version was produced through 1994.
