The History of Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is the fourth largest auto-manufacturer in Japan, and in 2006 was ranked 782nd on Forbes’ list of the 2000 largest public companies. It is part of the Mitsubishi keiretsu, formerly the largest industrial group in Japan. Mitsubishi’s automotive origins date back as far as 1917, when the Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. introduced the Mitsubishi Model A, Japan’s first series-production automobile. An entirely hand-built seven-seater sedan based on the Fiat Tipo 3, it proved expensive compared to its American and European mass-produced rivals, and production was discontinued in 1921 after only 22 had been built.
Meanwhile, in 1920, the Mitsubishi Internal Combustion Engine Co., Ltd. was established to manufacture aircraft engines. It was renamed the Mitsubishi Aircraft Co. in 1928, before being merged with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in 1934 to create Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI).
The Mitsubishi Galant was launched in 1969 as a two and four-door sedan, sold in some markets as the Colt Galant. It featured a choice of 1.3 or 1.5 L four-cylinder engines. It was sold in the United States as the Dodge Colt from 1971.
Launched in 1970, the original Mitsubishi GTO was as the two-door hardtop variant of the new Galant sedan, and was known as the Colt Galant GTO. Designed by Hiroaki Kamisago, it incorporated many stylistic cues from contemporary American muscle cars like the Mustang, Firebird and Cougar, including a long hood, raised cut-off ducktail rear, and rounded quad-headlamps and tail-lamps. It was also the first Japanese passenger car to have full side windows and a pillarless design.
The Mitsubishi Lancer is a compact automobile built in 1973 by Mitsubishi. It has been sold in various countries as the Colt Lancer, Dodge/Plymouth Colt, Chrysler Valiant Lancer, Chrysler Lancer, Eagle Summit, Hindustan Lancer, Mitsubishi Carisma, and Mitsubishi Mirage, and formed the basis of numerous Proton models in Malaysia.
The Cordia was a compact coupé built by Mitsubishi in 1982, and was one of the first cars imported and sold to America by the company without the involvement of its then partner, the Chrysler Corporation. Its name is supposedly an amalgam of "cordorite" (a lustrous mineral) and "diamonds" from Mitsubishi’s Three Diamonds logo.
In 1989 the Mitsubishi Eclipse is a two-door, four-seat sports car that is produced solely for the United States and Canadian markets, where it has also been built as the Eagle Talon and the Plymouth Laser through the Mitsubishi Motors Corporation’s close relationship with the Chrysler Corporation (now DaimlerChrysler) Their partnership was known as Diamond Star Motors, or DSM. Eclipses are popular among racers, and other automotive enthusiasts in part because of the car’s low price and wealth of aftermarket parts.
The Mitsubishi Endeavor is a mid-size SUV that is based on the platform of the Galant. It debuted in 2004. Like the Lancer-based Outlander, the Endeavor offers an optional all-wheel-drive system that splits the torque 50/50 by default. It replaced the Mitsubishi L200-based Montero Sport in the lineup, slotted between the small Outlander and the large Montero.
