The History of Isuzu

Isuzu is one of the oldest companies in the Japanese automotive industry. It traces its beginnings to 1916, the year Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. initiated plans for automobile production. In 1922, Japan’s first domestically produced truck, a Wolseley model A-9, was completed. In 1934, after meeting Ministry of Trade and Industry standards, the vehicles were renamed ’Isuzu’ after the Isuzu River in the Ise Shrine area. This is the origin of the company name, which was changed to today’s ’Isuzu Motors Limited’ in 1949.

After World War II, development and production of trucks occurred at a feverish pace. Isuzu trucks were needed to carry all kinds of products and foodstuffs, and they played a major role in reconstruction after the war. Isuzu’s passion for trucks is firmly rooted in this period. Since that time, an endless variety of models from light-duty to heavy-duty trucks and buses have rolled off the Isuzu production lines, with each vehicle well utilized to support economic growth.

Isuzu has also been at the forefront of automotive engineering as a passenger vehicle manufacturer. Starting with the first Hillman passenger car in 1953, Isuzu introduced Bellel in 1961 and the Bellett in 1963. "Bellett GT" met with popular acclaim and was affectionately known by its nickname, "Bele GT". In 1968, the Giugiaro-designed 117 Coupe reached the market. The Gemini, a vehicle jointly developed with GM, was introduced in 1974, followed in 1981 by another Giugiaro design, the Piazza, and a compact 4WD vehicle, the Rodeo Bighorn. In 1985, Isuzu introduced FF Gemini, and its television commercial featuring daredevil stunt-driving was very popular. Isuzu’s distinctive passenger cars and sport-utility vehicles continue to have a loyal following of fans.

In 1971, Isuzu reached agreement on affiliation with General Motors. This marks the beginning of Isuzu’s full-scale overseas strategy, and by 1972 the company was exporting KB pickups to the United States. In another partnership with GM, Isuzu unveiled the Gemini in 1974 as part of the first ’world car’ plan. In the intervening 30 years, Isuzu has been diligent in setting up bases in Thailand, North America and China, nurturing many friendships over the years and creating a firm foundation for today’s overseas strategy.

Between 1983 and 2002, Isuzu Motors Limited of Japan manufactured and exported the mid-size SUV Isuzu Trooper. Though it was never a sales favorite in the SUV world, and was eventually eclipsed by more contemporary car-like SUVs, it is the rugged and sturdy qualities of these vehicles which have earned them an enduring fan base amongst off road enthusiasts.

There were two generations of the Trooper produced - the first spanning 1983 through 1991, and the second from 1992 through 2002 when Isuzu ceased export of the model. It began its production run being somewhat primitive and underpowered, and offered only a 4 cylinder motor, a standard 5 speed manual transmission, and part-time 4 x 4 system. As the first generation progressed, it became more luxurious and offered more amenities, the a V6 engine. The second generation was even larger, more refined, and was available with two wheel drive.

The Rodeo made its debut in 1991. The mid-size SUV was available with either a 2.6 L 4-cylinder engine or a 120 hp, 3.1 L V6 made by General Motors. An automatic transmission was available for the latter. The vehicle was available with a four-wheel drive with manually locking hubs on the S version and automatically locking hubs on the XS and top-of-the-line LS. Rear antilock brakes were standard feature, but not an option for all four wheels.

The Isuzu Axiom was designed in Japan using a "knife blade" theme for its car-like styling. It was built in Indiana, U.S. at the joint Subaru-Isuzu plant on the Rodeo platform. The Axiom was available with Torque-on-Demand four-wheel drive system and added in 2004, a direct-injection engine, boosting its power from 230 to 250 hp. The Rodeo and Axiom were discontinued in July, 2004.

The Isuzu Ascender is a mid-size SUV from General Motors. Introduced for 2003, the 7-passenger Ascender replaced the mid-size Isuzu Trooper. It also replaced the Rodeo and the Axiom as Isuzu’s only SUV. A shorter 5-passenger model was made available for 2004. A Displacement on Demand V8 was used for 2005. Production of the 7-passenger Ascender ended in February 2006 with the closure of GM’s Oklahoma City Assembly plant. The Ascender will be discontinued after the 2007 model year.
