Infiniti Today

Infiniti is Nissan’s answer to automobile luxury, available in the US, Canada, Mexico, Middle East, and Taiwan with plans to expand further to Russia, Ukraine and Europe. Infiniti’s model structures are based on standard Nissan models, however, Infiniti’s message to the consumer is power and luxury all the way. Infiniti’s main emphasis is on powerful engines, tuned suspensions, and crisp steering systems, as well as all the comfort amenities. Infiniti’s approach to its model names is very helpful once the consumer has cracked the code. One letter means the vehicle is a coupe or a sedan, as in the Q45, and the number reflects the engine displacement. In this case, the flagship Infiniti sedan Q45 has a 4.5L engine. SUV’s have two letters as with the QX56 with a 5.6L engine. One exception is the QX4 SUV, actually a 3.3L engine—later changed to a 3.5L engine. An ‘x’ following the displacement numbers denotes an all wheel drive model.

The History of Infiniti

Not to be out done by Toyota’s very popular luxury car Lexus and Honda’s Acura, in 1989 Nissan launched its own version of luxury onto the US market. Sales at first were rather lack-luster. After some advertising adjustments to find the right images that spoke to American consumers, Nissan found its luxury niche. What do Americans want? Well Infiniti seemed to fill the bill on the many fronts of style, comfort, and "guts". The popular Q45 mentioned above also included a class leading 278hp V8 engine, four-wheel steering, the first active suspense system, and many interior luxury goodies. This gave them the competitive advantage.

Once satisfied with the success of its luxury sedan, Infiniti turned its sights on the burgeoning SUV market. The release of the QX4 was an amped up version of the Nissan Pathfinder, making Infiniti the first to offer a mid sized luxury SUV (outside of SUV exclusive manufacturers, Jeep and Land Rover) to the American market. Despite its earlier success, by the late 1990’s Infiniti was facing some hard times mostly due to financial difficulties of its parent company, Nissan. Infiniti’s focus on comfort had overshadowed its get-up-an-go component and the Q45 had become a barely recognizable, hard to handle sedan, nick-named the "Japanese Lincoln". Infiniti attempted to rectify the situation by releasing a succession of sporty tidbits such as the G20, I30 and J30 but none enjoyed the accolades of earlier models.

Faced with the possibility of its demise, Infiniti refocused and returned to its original understanding of what Americans want. It seems they had forgotten the "guts" part. Once again, the Q45 was redesigned for the 2002 model year; however, it was the release of the G35 that finally turned things around in 2003. The G20 and G35 became instant compact sports sedan hits. Reconfiguring its take on SUVs, Infiniti launched its crossover FX35/FX345, both of which combine sports car handling with station-wagon like versatility and all-weather superior handling. The compact G35 was outfitted with all-wheel drive to improve its attractiveness as an all year vehicle option.

Today Infiniti’s reputation for comfort and muscle has been restored. The mid sized M35/M45 continue to be praised by the automotive press and consumers as well.
