The History of Hyundai

Founded in 1947 by Chung Ju-yung, the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company, was later established Hyundai Motor Company in 1967. The first model unveiled, the Cortina, was released in cooperation with the Ford Motor Company in 1968. In 1975, the Pony, the first Korean car, was released—based on Japanese technology from Mitsubishi. In 1986, Hyundai began to sell cars in the United States; the Excel was nominated "Best Product #10" by Fortune magazine, largely because of its affordability. The company began to produce models with its own technology in 1988, beginning with the midsize Sonata.

Starting in 1998, Hyundai began to overhaul its image in an attempt to establish itself as a world-class brand. Hyundai’s parent company, Hyundai Motor Group, invested heavily in the quality, design, manufacturing, and long-term research of its vehicles. It added a 10-year or 100,000 mile warranty to cars sold in the United States. Hyundai is now the fastest-growing auto brand in the United States and in 2004, it was ranked second in initial quality in a survey/study by J.D. Power and Associates. Hyundai is now one of the top 100 most valuable brands worldwide.

The redesigned 2000 Hyundai Accent sported a more angular body and increased dimensions. It received a minor facelift in 2003. Since 2002, the Accent had been the longest-running subcompact sold in North America. The Hyundai Elantra also had an all-new model launched in 2001 and again in 2004. The wagon was dropped in favor of a five-door hatchback. Starting in 2001, all American models came with standard front and front side airbags, air conditioning, power locks, power windows and power steering. This simplified dealer inventories and repairs and also improved Hyundai’s image of ‘value’ cars.

The original Sonata was part of Hyundai’s expansion in North America after the success of the Excel. It was introduced in 1988, as a 1989 model in North America. The exterior was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro of ItalDesign. The vehicle received a mid-term redesign in 1991. The 6th generation Sonata was launched in August 2004 in Korea. A new platform also was borne out of the project NF for total cost of 290 billion won. The company’s first all-aluminum I4 engine, dubbed Theta, debuted in the new Sonata. Engine choices at launch were a 16-valve 2.0 L and a 2.4 L that produced 166 ps at 5,800 rpm. The U.S. launch of the all-new Sonata kicked off with the historical opening of the first U.S. assembly plant for the Korea-based Hyundai Motor Company in May 2005 located in Montgomery, Alabama.

The Hyundai Tiburon is a sport coupe produced by Hyundai since 1996. Enthusiasts sometimes refer to the Tiburon by the nickname "Tib". The Tib is based on the current Avante platform and is front wheel drive.

The Hyundai Tucson is a compact crossover SUV launched in 2005. It shares its Elantra-based platform with the redesigned 2005 Kia Sportage. The Tucson offers modest cargo space but its easy-to-fold seats can expand this area. Even the front passenger seat folds flat for extra-long cargo. One major point of the Tucson is its safety feature content. There are dual-stage frontal impact airbags, torso side-impact airbags built into the front seats, and curtain airbags for side-impact protection for front and rear passengers. The front passenger airbag has a deactivation feature where if the seat is unoccupied, the airbag will not deploy in the event of a frontal collision, saving on repair costs. Changes for 2006 were minimal. The LX became the Limited and got color-coded cladding, automatic climate control, and a high-performance sound system . The GLS retained the gray cladding but "HYUNDAI" is no longer branded into the cladding on the front doors. The GLS also had improved cloth seats with the option of a heating element. Both GLS and Limited have redesigned alloy wheels. The base GL remains unchanged.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size crossover SUV based on the Hyundai Sonata platform. It was introduced for the 2001 model year. Hyundai’s success for releasing its first-ever SUV began with a push to release the first economy mid-size crossover SUV in North America, the Highlander. Toyota and GM, with the the Pontiac Aztek, were competing for the same market. It was a major milestone in the company’s restructuring program of the late 1990s. The Santa Fe, despite being criticized by journalists for its obscure looks, was a hit with the American buyers. Hyundai dealers were having a hard time keeping them in stock, let alone keeping up with demand. The Santa Fe quickly became Hyundai’s best seller and was a major factor in keeping the company afloat in the United States.
