The History of GMC
Some of the earliest commercial trucks ever designed were the product of a company called "Rapid Motor Vehicles". Their trucks featured one cylinder engines. RMV was purchased in 1909 by General Motors and became General Motors Truck Company which was shortened to GMC. Another independent manufacturer, Reliance Motor Car Company, was purchased by General Motors in 1911 forming the basis for the GMC of today. The first "GMC Truck" was shown at the New York Auto Show in 1912.
GMC Today
Today, GMC continues to specialize in trucks of all kinds. The utilitarian pickup with models like Sierra (1999-current), Sonoma (1982-2003) and Canyon (2004-current) are still considered to be the affordable work horses of today. Commercial and private vans are also a must for many small businesses. GMC offers newer models like Safari (1985-2005) and Savana (1996-Current) for just these needs. There are still many Handy-Van (1964-1970) and Vandura (1970-1996) still in use at present due to their excellent construction.
The new millennium saw the explosion in popularity of SUV’s and GMC was right there with models like Envoy, Jimmy, Suburban (renamed to Yukon XL) to meet the needs of today’s sportsmen, soccer parents, and guys with dogs who love trucks. It is exciting to note that GMC is coming out with the Acadia in 2007 which is a crossover SUV and will be the company’s first unibody vehicle. With most consumer attention focused on the SUVs, GMC has continued to produce medium duty trucks to meet every need such as the TopKick and L-Series, B-Series, T-series, W-series. GMC has not released any Heavy duty trucks since 1988 but there are still Astros, Generals and Brigadiers for those who need the extra tonnage muscle.
