The History of Dodge
In 1901, John Dodge and Horace Dodge moved their Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan. Their bearings and other parts were in demand with the early automobile industry, and they helped design motor parts for early Oldsmobiles. The Dodge Brothers were approached by Henry Ford, in 1902, who was looking for help in financing his own automobile company. Dodge Brothers helped finance the start of the Ford Motor Company as well as manufacturing parts for early Fords. Ford and the Dodge Brothers both benefited financially from their alliance.
In 1914, the Dodge Brothers started their own auto company, which they named the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company, choosing 50 dealers initially from hundreds of applications, some of which remain successful today. In 1917, Dodge Brothers began building motor trucks as well, at first for use by the United States Army during World War I, then commercially after the war’s end.
In 1925, the Dodge Brothers Company was purchased by Dillon, Read & Company for US$146 million, said to be the largest cash transaction in history up to that time. Dillon Read in turn sold Dodge to the Chrysler Corporation on July 31, 1928.
The Neon, released in 1995, was a compact car built by both Dodge and Plymouth brands. It was produced as a front wheel drive car to replace the Dodge Shadow and Plymouth Sundance, as well as the Dodge/Plymouth Colt series. The Dodge Neon came in many different versions throughout its production, but the most sought after model was the Dodge SRT-4, because of its low price and class-leading performance.
The Dodge Stratus, introduced in 1995, and the Chrysler Cirrus and Plymouth Breeze were collectively known as the "Cloud Cars". The Stratus is a mid-size 4-door sedan, and is based on the Chrysler JA platform. The Stratus, Breeze, and Cirrus were all on Car and Driver magazine’s Ten Best list in 1996 and in 1997. Dodge Intrepid was a large four-door, full-size, front-wheel drive sedan released in 1993. It was mechanically related to the Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler New Yorker, and Eagle Vision sedans. The two-seat sports car, Dodge Viper, is the most powerful production car made by Dodge. Viper production began in 1992—the Chevrolet Corvette is its biggest rival.
The mid-sized SUV Dodge Durango, debuted in the 1998 model year, was redesigned for 2004. It fills the gap in the Dodge lineup since the cancellation of the Dodge Ramcharger in 1993. The Dakota is a midsize pickup truck from DaimlerChrysler’s Dodge brand. It was introduced in 1987 alongside the redesigned Dodge Ram 50. The Dakota was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award for 2000. The Dakota has always been sized above the compact (Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S-10) and below the full-sized (Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado) pickups and Dodge’s own Ram. It is a conventional design with body-on-frame construction and leaf spring/live axle rear end. The Dakota has long been the only midsize pickup with an optional V8 engine. One notable feature was the Dakota’s rack and pinion steering, a first in work trucks.
The Dodge Ram is a full-size pickup truck. The name was first used in 1981 on the redesigned D Series, although it came from the hood ornament used in the 1930s and 1940s trucks. The Ram was Motor Trend magazine’s Truck of the Year for 1994 and the Ram Heavy Duty won Truck of the Year for 2003. The Dodge Caravan and Grand Caravan are minivans. They were introduced in 1983 along with a sister model, the Plymouth Voyager. Since their introduction, the Chrysler minivans have been the best-selling minivans in the United States.
