The History of Chevrolet
Louis Chevrolet and William Durrant founded Chevrolet in 1909. The Chevrolet Bowtie has been one of the World’s most recognized trademarks since 1913 when it was introduced. William Durant copied the bowtie design from wallpaper in a Paris Hotel. General Motors acquired Chevrolet in 1917.
In 1920, as competition rose from rivaling Ford and Dodge, General Motors began preparing new Chevrolet models and body styles. The Chevrolet models seemed no different than there competitors until the debut of the 1925 Superior. The Superior had disc wheels and sold for only $650. Chevrolet out-sold Ford for the first time, even though Ford was switching over from the Model T to A. The "Cast Iron Wonder" was debuted in 1929, and sold more than a million cars in its first year at $595. In 1931, Chevrolet finally surpassed Ford and held on strong for the next three years. Chevy came up with many new designs and styles in this era. In 1934, Chevrolet was the first to introduce independent front suspension. They also introduced many new features like, V-Grilles, hydraulic brakes, column shifters and convertible tops. Chevrolet introduced the Suburban Carryall, in 1935, a 1/2-ton truck with seating capacity for eight. In 1939, they introduced their first station wagon and in 1940, their first power convertible top. In 1941, Chevy broke a record, manufacturing 1.6 million cars and trucks in that year.
In 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette is introduced. It is the first volume production sports car and the first production car with a plastic body to be produced in quantity. In 1957, Chevrolet’s most prized collector car was released, the 1957 Bel Air. The El Camino, a vehicle with big car comfort and the utility of a pick-up truck debuted in 1959, also out that year was the Corvair.
As part of the 1962 model year, Chevrolet introduced a new line of smaller cars, the Chevy II. In 1964, Chevrolet introduced its midsize Malibu and in 1967, Chevrolet introduced the popular the F-body Camaro, which contributed to 10% of its total sales in that year.
In 1975, Chevrolet introduced the Chevette, manufactured by GM subsidiaries in Argentina, Brazil and England and sold under the names Kadett, Chevette, Gemini and K-180. In 1979, GM introduced newly designed front-wheel-drive compact cars, the Buick Skylark, Chevrolet Citation, Oldsmobile Omega and Pontiac Phoenix X-body models.
In 1984, the Chevrolet Corvette was introduced—the car’s first major styling change in 15 years. In 1988, Chevrolet introduced its Geo line of small vehicles with Geo Metro, Spectrum and Tracker.
In 2001, The Chevrolet Cruze was launched in Japan. Developed by GM and its alliance partner Suzuki, the Cruze is the first GM vehicle to be built in Japan since the 1930s. In 2003, GM announced that the 2005 model year GMC Envoy XL, Envoy XUV and Chevrolet trailblazer EXT would be the first vehicles to showcase its innovative Displacement on Demand fuel-saving technology, which enhances fuel economy without compromising performance or the ability to carry heavy loads. Displacement on Demand is a standard feature in the vehicles’ optional Vortec 5300 V-8 engine. The technology, which boosts the Vortec engine’s fuel efficiency by 8 percent, is also introduced in other GM engines in the 2006 model year.
GM Powertrain introduced its new Ecotec 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine for the all new 2005 model year Chevrolet Cobalt. Bringing variable valve timing to the Ecotec engine family for the first time, the Ecotec 2.4-liter engine offers improved low-end torque and fewer emissions than the previous 2.2-liter version.
General Motors continues to innovate with the introduction of the world’s first full-size hybrid pickup truck. The hybrid Chevrolet Silverado delivers up to 12 percent fuel economy improvement over comparable pickups, giving it the best highway fuel economy of any full-size truck on the market. Hybrid versions of both the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Silverado pickup are scheduled to go on sale in the fall.
