The History of Cadillac
Henry M. Leland founded the Cadillac Automobile Company in 1902. Henry introduced an $850 Cadillac at the 1903 New York Auto Show. Within a week, he had taken 2,286 orders for the car. Cadillac manufactured nearly 2,500 cars that year—a huge number at the time.
Cadillac increased its market in 1905 by adding a four-cylinder model at $2,800. In 1908, Cadillac won the prestigious Thomas Dewar Trophy. The Royal Automobile Club of London awarded the prize each year for the most important advance in automotive technology.
In 1909, General Motors bought Cadillac. General Motors appointed Henry Leland as president. Three years later, Cadillac offered the world’s first electric starter, developed at Delco by Charles F. Kettering. The Delco starter used a combined generator and electric motor that cranked the engine flywheel. Kettering’s breakthrough earned Cadillac another Dewar Trophy.
In 1915, Cadillac introduced a flathead V8, this engine produced 70 hp at 2400 rpm and 180 ft.-lb. of torque. The V8 gave Cadillac a top speed of 65 mph, which was faster than most roads at the time, could accommodate.
Over the years, Cadillac has introduced many new models and vehicle technologies, culminating in the 500 cubic inch V8 and the front wheel drive Eldorado series of the late 1960s and ’70s. In 1976, the downsized but luxurious Seville was introduced.
In the late 1980s, Mercedes-Benz, through a combination of good design and great quality, knocked Cadillac out of its leadership position. But Cadillac began staging a comeback in the 1990s. The sleek Seville STS arrived for 1992 and the aluminum twin-cam Northstar V8 was added in 1993. The division does not hold the dominant position it held throughout most of its history, but from all indications, it seems well on its way back to the top.
Cadillac introduced many innovations in the 90s, including the Allante that became the first front wheel drive car manufactured with traction control. In 1999, Cadillac was the first to offer an automotive application of thermal imaging technology, also known as night vision. Introduced in 1999, the Escalade is a full-size luxury sport utility vehicle (or SUV) sold by Cadillac. It was the division’s first major entry into the popular SUV market.
In 2002 for the 2003 model year, the Cadillac CTS rode on General Motors’ new Sigma rear wheel drive architecture. It was a return to rear wheel drive, as well as being the first Cadillac with a manual transmission since the 1988 Cimarron. It replaced the compact rear wheel drive Catera. The CTS was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award for 2002. The 2005 STS is the successor to the "import fighter" Cadillac Seville. That car used the STS name, standing for "Seville Touring Sedan" on upscale performance-oriented versions from at least 1988.
