The History of Buick
The Buick Motor Company originated as an independent motor car manufacturer and was incorporated on May 19, 1903 by David Dunbar Buick in Flint, Michigan. The struggling company was taken over by James Whiting in 1904. Whiting brought in William C. Durant to manage the acquisition. Durant was a natural, and Buick soon became the largest car maker in America.
Buick’s emblem consists of three shields, each bisected diagonally to the right by a straight line. The shields are arranged touching each other in a left–diagonal pattern, inside a circle. If represented in color, the leftmost shield is red, the middle white, and the rightmost blue, although white is sometimes represented by light gray. This design, known as the Trishield, was adopted in 1959 for the 1960 models and represents the three models that comprised the lineup that year: LeSabre, Invicta, and Electra. The shields are adopted from the shield of the Buick family crest, which in modified form had been used on Buicks since the 30s. A version of the traditional crest appeared on Electras through the 70s.
In 1936, Buick renamed its entire model lineup for that year, to celebrate the engineering improvements and design advancements over their 1935 models. Buick’s Series 40 model range became the Special, the Series 80 became the Roadmaster and the Series 90, which was Buick’s largest and most luxurious vehicles, became the Limited. The Century took the place of the Series 60.
The Buick Skylark was introduced to mark Buick’s 50th anniversary—the first use of the name for a production vehicle—on one of three specialty convertibles produced in 1953 by General Motors. The other two convertibles were the Oldsmobile Fiesta and the Cadillac Eldorado. All three were limited production vehicles promoting General Motors’ design leadership. Of the three, the Skylark had the most successful production run with 1,690 produced. This was considered quite an amazing sales feat, for the car had a list price in 1953 of slightly in excess of US$5,000.
The Buick LeSabre was a full-size car made by the Buick in 1959, replacing the Special. For many years, the LeSabre was considered the entry level full-sized Buick, carrying the lowest base price in the Buick lineup.
Buick was the first GM division to bring a personal luxury car to market with its full-size 1963 Riviera. However, Buick was slow to react to the developing mid-size personal luxury market, that Pontiac created with the 1969 Grand Prix. Buick introduced the Regal in 1973, technically an upscale market variant of the Century.
The Park Avenue started out as a trim package on the Buick’s 1975 Electra. In 1991, the Park Avenue name was used as the car’s successor for the 1991 model year. The Park Avenue was Buick’s flagship sedan.
Buick began consolidating its lineup in 2005, replacing the Century and Regal with the LaCrosse, and the LeSabre and Park Avenue with the Lucerne in 2006. The company will replace both of its SUVs, the Rendezvous and Rainier, with the Enclave within 18 months. The slow-selling Terraza minivan is likely to end production shortly thereafter. Buick will have just three models by 2009.
