The History of Audi
Audi was established in 1899 under the name A. Horch & Cie, in the Ehrenfeld district of Cologne. Creator August Horch (1868 - 1951) developed his first car in the beginning of 1901. In early 1902, the company was moved to Reichenbach in Saxony. In 1904, the company was converted to a share-issuing company and moved again to a new location, Zwickau—where a long tradition of car production was started.
In 1968, the Auto Union unveiled the Audi 100 developed by chief engineer Dr. Ludwig Kraus. In 1972, the Audi 80 or Fox was developed; it’s 4-cylinder OHC engine formed the basis for the 1973 Volkswagen Passat and the Audi 50. It was later relabeled as the Volkswagen Polo in 1974.
In 1980, the Audi Quattro was introduced. This four-wheel drive sports coupe was the first of it’s kind in a high performance vehicle. This concept had only been used in trucks and off-road vehicles. The Audi Quattro’s permanent four wheel drive system made it a major success in the entire Audi model range. Referred to as the "Ur-Quattro", the "Ur-" prefix is a German augmentative used, in this case, to mean "original." It is also applied to the first generation of Audi’s S4 and S6 sport sedans—as in "UrS4" and "UrS6". In 1987, Audi developed a new and very elegant Audi 90, that had a much superior set of standard features from the Audi 80.
The 1990’s proved to be a busy year of the next generation for Audi models. The new line up included new cars, and some older models that were redesigned and renamed. The Audi 100 became the Audi A6, versions C4, C5, and later in 2004 the C6. The Audi 80 became the Audi A4, a mid-size luxury car, with versions B5, and in the 2000’s the B6, B7, and B8. The Audi 50, having long been retired, was brought back as the Audi A3, and then redesigned in 2003. The Audi A8, their flag ship large luxury vehicle, replaced Audi’s V8 line and features an all aluminum space frame.
The 2000’s brought many new and exciting lines to Audi’s line up: the Audi S8, the Audi Q7, Audi’s first attempt at a SUV, and the sporty roadster Audi TT. Audi announced in 2005 that their popular Audi R8 race car will be also the name for a new road car to be released in 2007.
