The History of Acura
In 1986, Honda began marketing the brand name of Acura in the US, Canada, Mexico and Hong Kong. The Acura brand was credited with being the first Japanese manufactured car to enter the Luxury vehicle market. Before Acura, automobiles from Japan were considered economical and reliable above all else—but spartan. Although now there are other Japanese luxury brands, Toyota’s Lexus and Nissan’s Infiniti, Acura was the first to tap this market.
In 1989, Acura introduced the NSX, a sporty 276 HP two door coupe. The NSX, an acronym for "New Sports Experimental", was considered the first Japanese manufactured exotic car capable of taking on Ferrari and Porsche.
In the 1990’s, Acura started to gain prominence with younger drivers. Honda’s reputation as a manufacturer of the new "Import Muscle Car", started to rub off on Acura, and the Integra became a very popular tuner car. This reputation still holds true today with the RSX and TSX.
In the early 2000’s, Acura entered the popular market of SUV’s by introducing the MDX. Although the MDX had little off road capability, it smartly catered to the Luxury SUV market. It was given top honors by Car and Driver in a comparison test of seven other SUV’s. Other cars in Acura’s line up during this era included the 3.2TL, 3.2CL, RSX and the sports car, NSX.
In 2004, Acura debuted a new TL, with sporty styling, a powerful 276hp V6 and 6-speed manual transmission. The TL led to a dramatic increase in sales for Acura. In the same year, the TSX was introduced to compete with the BMW 3-series. This model became the only 4-cylinder sedan in Acura’s line up. In 2005, the new RL debuted with an even more powerful 300hp V6. The RL had an innovative Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system, capable of sending almost all of the RL’s power to just one wheel in a turn.
Acura is getting set to introduce the RDX, a smaller SUV set to feature the RL’s SH-AWD. This model should debut in 2006 as a 2007 model.
